The metrics that matter when evaluating a YouTube channel

A TikTok video is largely finished in its first week. A YouTube video can keep collecting views for months. So do not transfer TikTok's engagement formula to YouTube: a low engagement rate on YouTube is normal and says nothing bad about the video.

Three numbers worth reading

1. Median views of the 50 most recent posts, excluding the newest. A post from this week has not had time to accumulate views. Including it drags the figure down.

2. Comments as a share of views. On YouTube, comments are a stronger signal than likes: they take more effort, and they mean the viewer stayed long enough to have an opinion.

3. Consistency between videos. A good YouTube channel usually has a narrower view range than TikTok, because the audience arrives deliberately. An unusually wide range means the channel is living on recommendations rather than on subscribers.

YouTube report — 5 credits — reads the 50 most recent posts with views, likes and comments.

Why not to compare directly with TikTok

Three differences make any direct comparison wrong:

  • Accumulation period. 50 YouTube posts can span two years; 60 TikTok videos can span two months.
  • Viewer intent. Someone opening YouTube is usually looking for something specific. Someone opening TikTok is watching what is pushed at them.
  • Content length. A 15-minute video and a 20-second video cannot be compared on the same engagement metric.

The right comparison is by objective: if your product needs explaining, YouTube wins despite the lower rate. If you need many people to hear about it fast, TikTok wins.

When YouTube is worth booking

When the product needs explaining. A ten-minute review does work that thirty seconds cannot, and it keeps bringing people to your sales page for months.

That is also why reuse rights are worth negotiating harder on YouTube: if a video lives for two years, the clause about how long the post stays up matters far more. See the 12-point checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Can I read average watch time? No. That is internal analytics only the channel owner sees. Public data gives views, likes and comments.

Can I download a YouTube video as reference footage? No. The YouTube media stream endpoint was removed from the system over copyright exposure. For your own TikTok videos, yes — see the copyright article.

How does the YouTube trending board relate to the channel report? They are different tools. Trends reads the Vietnam YouTube trending board; the channel report reads one specific channel.
