Why median views matter more than follower count

Comparing follower count with median views for one channel

Also available in: Tiếng Việt

Follower count is the cumulative total of everything a channel has ever done, including three years ago. Median views is what the channel can do now. On TikTok these two can diverge by a factor of tens in either direction, and the number you buy when booking is the second one.

Why they diverge

The For You page pushes videos to non-followers. Two situations are both very common:

Views far above follower count. A 10,000-follower channel with a 500,000-view video. The platform is pushing this channel, and you buy more than the follower count promised.

Views far below follower count. A 200,000-follower channel whose videos get 3,000 views. This channel was once large but is no longer being pushed — or the followers were bought. See seven signs.

The second case is the one that loses money, because booking prices are almost always quoted on follower count.

Median or mean

Use the median. One viral video pulls a mean up hard and makes the whole figure meaningless.

Example, three videos: 35,000, 120,000 and 810,000 views. The mean is 321,667; the median is 120,000. Pay on 321,667 and you are paying for a piece of luck that already happened.

The practical approach: read the whole series, drop the highest and lowest, then average the rest. Channel report — 5 credits — returns per-video views across the 60 most recent videos plus the distribution, so you see immediately whether the series is skewed.

Two numbers to read together

Median views — what you buy.

Engagement rate by views — the quality of those views. Multiply the two for absolute interactions per video, and that figure compares across every channel size. See how to calculate it and choosing a tier.

A note about time spans

Sixty videos from a daily channel is two months; from a weekly channel it is over a year. The two medians do not cover the same period, so when comparing, always check the oldest video's date. See posting frequency.

Every figure is an estimate from public data the platform displays, not the channel's internal analytics.

Frequently asked questions

So follower count is completely useless? Not completely. It signals order of magnitude and matters to brands wanting endorsement. But it should not be the main number for pricing.

Can views be bought? Harder than likes and comments, but yes. Which is why you should read share and save rates too, not only views.

Should I ask the creator for their median views? No need. You can read it from public data, and reading it yourself does not depend on how they chose to calculate.
