Three filter questions before deciding to catch a trend

Also available in: Tiếng Việt

Chasing every rising trend is the fastest way to end up with a channel that has many views and that nobody remembers selling anything. The three questions below take thirty seconds and filter out most trends you should not catch.

Three questions

1. What can I say in this format that only I can say?

If the answer is "nothing, I would just do what everyone else does", skip it. That video may get views but it builds nothing.

2. Will the new viewers from this video be my customers?

A comedy trend attracts viewers who came for comedy. If they will not buy your product, you have just diluted your audience — and that affects every video after it.

3. Can I finish before the trend ends?

If your process takes a week from idea to post, do not catch a "fast climb, fast fall" shape. Pick "slow climb, long stay" instead — see how long a sound lives.

Question two is the important one

This is where the damage is done and where nobody does the arithmetic. A trend video that brings ten thousand unrelated followers will drag down the engagement of your later videos, because those people do not care about your usual content.

The effect is double: the channel looks worse on the numbers, and you can no longer tell which videos were genuinely good. See channel engagement dropping.

A sensible share of trend content

There is no correct number, but there is a usable way to think: trend content should be a new way of saying what you always say, not a new subject.

Which means before catching a trend, write one sentence: what is my consistent message, and how does this trend carry it. If you cannot write that sentence, the trend is not for you.

Three signs a channel is drifting

High views but comments that never mention the product. Read them with comments analysis — 12 credits, 300 comments.

Followers rising while orders do not.

You cannot say in one sentence what your channel is about.

When to catch a trend without thinking

When the trend is a sound rather than a format. Using a rising sound for your usual content is almost always safe: it increases discoverability without changing what you say. See finding sounds on the way up.

That is the most effective and least risky way to use trends.

Frequently asked questions

Will skipping trends slow my growth? It may. But growing slowly with the right audience usually produces more orders than growing fast with the wrong one.

Is there a tool that says whether a trend fits? No. The three questions are yours, because only you know what your brand is about.

Can I remove unrelated followers? No, and you should not want to. The fix is to keep posting the right content; time will filter.
