Backing up your own TikTok videos before something happens

Also available in: Tiếng Việt

Channels get restricted, videos get taken down over an audio copyright claim, and accounts get locked after a suspicious login. All three happen. Content you made over months can disappear in an afternoon, and there is no undo button.

Backup priority order

1. The original project file. The most important and the most overlooked: your editing software's project file, along with the raw footage. With the original you can re-edit, change the audio, and export for another platform. The file downloaded from TikTok is compressed and not editable.

2. The content list. Titles, descriptions, hashtags, posting dates and the numbers for each video. If you lose the channel, this is what tells you what you made and which pieces worked.

3. The published video file. Needed when you want to repost the original elsewhere and no longer have the project file.

Most people do only item 3, and it is the least valuable of the three.

Getting the content list

Channel report — 5 credits — reads a channel's 60 most recent videos with views, interactions and posting dates. Run it on your own channel each quarter and keep the results: you get both a backup of the list and data to compare over time.

For a channel posting daily, 45 videos is about six weeks. For longer history you have to run it periodically; there is no way to pull everything at once.

Downloading published files

Video download — 1 credit per video — takes a public TikTok video URL and returns the file without a watermark.

Three things to know:

  • There is no separate HD version. The tool returns the playback URL the platform has.
  • Download links expire within hours and are signed, so save the file immediately.
  • The tool requires you to tick a box confirming your rights to the content. For your own videos that is straightforward; for anyone else's see the copyright article.

For a channel with 200 videos, downloading everything is 200 credits. Consider downloading only the ones still useful.

Where to store it

Two copies in two different places. One on a machine, one in cloud storage. Drives die and cloud accounts get locked; both happen, rarely at the same time.

Name files by posting date rather than by content: 2026-09-21-short-name.mp4. In two years you will thank yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Is downloading my own video a problem? No. It is your content.

Can I download a private video? No. If a video returns no playable link, you receive nothing and the credit is refunded.

Can I download a whole channel in one run? No. Each run handles one video.
