Captions and hashtags: which one actually matters

Hashtags get discussed more than they deserve and captions less. Nobody outside the platform knows the exact weighting, so the only trustworthy approach is to test on your own channel rather than to trust an article.
Three things a caption does
1. Answers the first question. If the video does not have time to state the price, the size or the ingredients, the caption does. This is what captions do best.
2. Supplies context the video lacks. The venue address, the exact product name, the terms that apply.
3. Helps the video be found. The words in a caption are words a viewer might be searching — and here natural wording matters more than hashtags.
What hashtags do
Hashtags classify content. They help when you use specific hashtags the niche community actually uses, and they help almost not at all when you stuff the most popular general ones.
The reason is simple: general hashtags have millions of videos, so yours cannot surface from them. Niche hashtags have far fewer videos and have real people following them.
Testing it yourself in two weeks
Step 1 — get baseline data. Channel report — 5 credits, 60 most recent videos — for your own channel. Record median views.
Step 2 — split your videos into groups. Many hashtags versus few; long caption versus short. Use the 45 videos you already have.
Step 3 — compare each group's median. Not the mean: one viral video skews everything.
Step 4 — if the difference is clear, test deliberately. Post five videos one way and five the other over two weeks, then run the channel report again and compare.
Cost: 10 credits for two report runs. The result is true for your channel, not for whoever wrote the article.
Why not to trust general numbers
Every article about "the optimal number of hashtags" gives a different figure, and none says where the data came from. The weighting of these factors changes over time and is not published by the platform.
The four steps above cost 10 credits and answer the question for your own channel. That is data nobody can sell you.
One thing that is almost always true
A caption that answers the most repeated question in your comments will reduce that question in later videos. That is a measurable result and does not depend on the algorithm.
Get the question list from comments analysis — 12 credits, 300 comments. See content ideas from comments.
Frequently asked questions
Should hashtags be with or without diacritics? Vietnamese users type both. But do not stuff both forms — pick what your niche community uses.
Do long captions get truncated? The opening is what displays, so put the most important information first.
Is there a hashtag suggestion tool? CIA has no hashtag suggestion tool. The closest route is seeing which hashtags channels in your niche use, via the 45 videos in the channel report.
