Pricing against competitors without starting a price war

Setting the lowest price in a niche is the easiest decision to make and the one that shortens how long you have money. Public data gives you the market range in ten minutes, and the most important thing it shows is that the best-selling product is usually not the cheapest.
Reading the range in ten minutes
Run TikTok Shop radar — 15 credits, 3 pages of results — with two keywords describing your product accurately. Take 10–15 comparable products and note three figures:
- the lowest price
- the median price
- the price of the product with the highest units sold
The third figure is the interesting one. If it sits near the median rather than near the lowest price, your niche's market does not buy on price — it buys on something else.
Why median, not mean
One unusually expensive product pulls a mean up; one price-cutter pulls it down. The median ignores both and tells you where most of the market sits.
Three more figures worth recording at the same time: how many shops are selling (competition), units sold of the mid-table product (demand), and whether any shop sells above the median and still moves stock (room for a differentiated product).
Four ways to compete without discounting
1. Fix the flaw customers are complaining about. The strongest option. Run comments analysis — 12 credits, 300 comments — on a competitor's product, find the repeated flaw, then source stock without it. See grouping comments into themes.
2. Sell bundles. Higher unit price but larger order value, and harder to compare directly.
3. Describe it better. A size table with real measurements, real photos, an expected delivery time. It sounds minor, but "not like the photo" is almost always in the top three complaint themes.
4. After-sales service. Easy returns, fast replies. This shows up in reviews and pushes units over time.
When discounting is the right move
When you have a genuine cost advantage: larger order volumes, or your own production. Discounting without a cost advantage just transfers your margin to the customer, and competitors will follow within a week.
And always calculate fully before setting a price: landed cost, platform fees, shipping, return rate, content cost. Many shops price on landed cost plus a percentage and then discover the fees ate the percentage.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see a competitor's cost price? No. Public data has selling prices only.
Is the units-sold figure accurate? How it is calculated is not published by the marketplace, and it may pool variants. Use it for relative rank within one niche, not as an absolute number.
Should I price above or below the median? It depends what is different about you. Nothing different means near the median; a real advantage means above, and say why.
