Four research questions before buying stock for TikTok Shop

Also available in: Tiếng Việt

Buying stock on instinct is the fastest way to lose money on TikTok Shop. The four questions below are answerable from public data in about an hour for under 60 credits. If one comes back badly, do not buy — you will have saved many times the research cost.

Question 1 — is anybody selling this successfully

If nobody is, there are two possibilities: there is no demand, or you are ahead of the market. The first is far more common.

Run TikTok Shop radar — 15 credits, 3 pages — with two or three keywords. If no product shows meaningful units sold, stop here.

Question 2 — what are buyers complaining about

The most important question and the most skipped. If every comparable product is criticised for one thing, and you can source stock without that flaw, you have a real advantage.

Run comments analysis — 12 credits, 300 comments — on two videos selling comparable products. See what buyers complain about most.

Question 3 — what price range does the market accept

Take the prices of 10–15 comparable products from question 1 and find the median. The best-selling product is usually not the cheapest — it usually sits near the median.

If your landed cost plus platform fees plus shipping already exceeds that median, the maths does not work. See pricing against competitors.

Question 4 — how many shops are competing

Count the distinct shops in the results. Three shops selling this means there is room; thirty means margins are thin and you are competing on price.

Cost and order

Question Tool Credits
1 and 4 TikTok Shop radar, 2 keywords 30
2 comments analysis, 2 videos 24
3 read from question 1's results 0

About 54 credits. Work in order: question 1 first, and if it comes back badly you do not need the other three.

What this research does not answer

It does not tell you whether you can sell, because that depends on your content, price and service. It only eliminates niches where nobody is selling, or where you cannot compete on price. That is still most of the reasons people fail.

Every figure is an estimate from public data the platform displays. No marketplace publishes real revenue.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I re-research? Before every new stock order, and at least quarterly for a niche you are already in.

Can I predict which product will be hot next? No. Public data describes the present. See seasonal products for the closest thing to prediction.

What if I research and still buy wrong? It still happens. These four questions eliminate obvious mistakes, not risk.
